Social Proximity

Social Proximity: The Simulation of Presence
Social Proximity is the term for the Commodity version of Presence. It is the sensation of being seen, mentioned, or included in a social structure, without the material Behavioral Gravity of a literal neighborhood.
The Mechanic of the Simulation
As the Extractive Layer drains the structural mass of a community, it creates a void of Presence. It then sells the simulation of that presence back to the isolated subject:
- Hollow out the Local: The destruction of the Brush Arbor and the neighborhood, leaving the subject isolated.
- Market the Vibe: The symbols of belonging (The Heart) are turned into digital content—pure resonance detached from physical neighborliness.
- Sell Proximity: The subject pays for the sensation of being "close" to the source of resonance (e.g., a streamer, a brand, an influencer).
- The Transaction: The subject exchanges their Labor (cash) for a temporary hit of Social Capital that expires as soon as the feed stops.
Presence vs. Proximity: The Structural Support (NEC 344.30)
In a Pure MC diagnostic, we apply the 3-Foot Support Rule (derived from the NEC) to social structures:
- Presence (Supported): A neighbor within physical distance (3 feet) who carries your load. Like a code-compliant conduit, the connection is Secured and Supported by the physical reality of mutual risk.
- Proximity (Unsupported): A simulation (The Feed) that makes you feel connected over a distance, but lacks any structural support at the terminal point. It is a vibrating, loose conduit that will fail under any material load.
Diagnostic Standard
Social Proximity is the diagnostic used to identify an Unsupported Structure:
- Is it Supported?: Does the relationship have the physical support of presence within "3 feet" (Neighborhood), or is it an unsupported run of pure attention?
- Box or Loop?: Is the connection reaching a Junction Box (a place of real termination and survival), or is it just looping back into the Feed?
- The Voltage: When the crisis hits, can the structure carry the voltage of survival? Proximity shorts out immediately; Presence is grounded.
[!CAUTION] Social Proximity is a form of Borrowed Happiness. It is used to mask the pain of structural isolation. To defeat it, one must reclaim Presence by rebuilding the Brush Arbor—the only structure that can provide off-grid support.
